Favorite Romantic Vacation Spot #34: Baden Baden

Although Gigi grew up in Europe, she has never been to Germany. Her mami loved there for a while, and Gigi had many German friends. I think that Amy lived there for a while, because she picked Baden Baden, Germany. (a spa town), as her favorite romantic vacation spot. Just think of the picturesque towns, the beautiful scenery, the ancient castles

I love googling photos of places, and putting them on my list of places to visit some day… at this rate, Gigi and Jean-Claude will be travelling all over the world!!

Here is some information I found on Baden Baden:

Churches and castles – beautiful, mysterious, history-soaked buildings are what are in store for you here. See for yourself, and start an architectural journey through time in pursuit of the Margraves of Baden.

For all castle fanatics amongst you, the Hohenbaden Castle, built in 1102, and known locally as the Altes Schloss (Old Castle), is an absolute must! It was home from the 11th – 15th century to the Margraves of Baden. Try tracing their steps around this fascinating ruin. Discover dark, secret dungeons and tackle the winding staircases all the way up to the lookout point. Your reward, once here, will be a magnificent view of Baden-Baden, the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley.

Neues Schloss: Majestically situated on the Florentinerberg, a sun blessed hill overlooking Baden-Baden, is the Neues Schloss or New Castle – the former residence of the Margraves of Baden. Unfortunately, with the building being in private hands, it is not possible to visit either the castle or its gardens. It is, however, well worth wandering up to the terrace, in front of the castle, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Baden-Baden.
By the way, did you know that the entire contents of the castle were sold by Sotheby’s in a spectacular auction in 1995? In October 2003, the Neues Schloss was sold to the Kuwaiti Al Hassawi Group. It is believed that this listed building is to be renovated into a luxury hotel. Would you like to find out more? You can do so at: www.neues-schloss.com (Neues Schloss, Schlossstraße 22, 76530 Baden-Baden)

Russian Church: A glistening golden dome is the hallmark of this Byzantine-styled church, which should definitely be included on your tour of the town. Vladimir Potemkin and Bernhard Belzer built this spectacular structure between 1880 – 1882. Its interior was based on the designs of the master painter Grigor Grigorijewitsch and, as you will see, is liberally decorated with religious frescoes. Sample a piece of living Russian history in Baden-Baden.

Stiftskirche: Daunting though it may seem, do persevere and take the many steps up to the Marktplatz. The climb may be a little strenuous, but you will be rewarded at the top by the sight of Baden-Baden’s first parish church, the Stiftskirche – a dominant, late gothic building with striking features and impressive portal carvings. Built originally as a Roman basilica, it has witnessed numerous modifications over the centuries.

I’m in… it looks beautiful!!
